Derek Woodley graduated from the College of Air Training, Hamble in 1968 and joined BOAC as co-pilot and navigator on the Boeing 707. He was promoted to Captain in early 1977 and subsequently flew Viscount, BAC 1-11 and Boeing 737 aircraft before joining the Concorde fleet in 1994. From 1984 he was a senior instructor and a nominated flight crew examiner for British Airways on both the Boeing 737 and Concorde aircraft, and held the position of Training Standardization Captain.
He was in command of Concorde for its appearance at the Indonesian International Air show at Jakarta in 1996, the 21st Anniversary flight to New York in 1997 and the first commercial passenger flight to New York following the "Return to Service" in November 2001.
He retired from British Airways in 2003 after flying Concorde for nine years. During his career he achieved a total of 14,000 flying hours and 4000 hours instructing in simulators.
